Labor Caucus Calls on NLRB to Investigate Apple Inc. Treatment of Unionized Workers
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Labor Caucus Co-Chairs Reps. Debbie Dingell (MI-06), Mark Pocan (WI-02), Donald Norcross (NJ-01), and Steven Horsford (NV-04) led a letter to the NLRB, urging them to investigate alleged anti-union activities by Apple Inc.
“As members of the Congressional Labor Caucus, we write regarding the recent decision by Apple, Inc. to close retail store locations in Towson, MD, Trumbull, CT, and Escondido, CA,” wrote the lawmakers. “Employees at the Escondido and Trumbull locations have been offered relocation opportunities, while workers at the Towson location have not been provided relocation options and have been asked to apply to new job opportunities at Apple.”
“The Towson, Maryland location was the first Apple store in the country to unionize and secure a negotiated collective bargaining agreement with the company. We are alarmed that the company is making efforts to relocate employees at stores that have non-bargaining unit workers, while denying those same benefits to unionized locations,” continued the lawmakers. “It is our understanding that by not making good-faith efforts to relocate these workers, Apple Inc. is failing to honor contractual commitments made as part of the August 2024 collective bargaining agreement with the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM).”
“Under the NLRA, both parties must abide by the terms of the agreement unless they receive consent from the other party to deviate from the contract. That includes employers complying with the NLRA and all CBA requirements. Accordingly, we respectfully call on the NLRB to thoroughly investigate alleged practices, reach a timely resolution to this issue, ensure that workers’ rights and benefits are protected, and, if violations are identified, provide robust enforcement of labor law to make workers whole,” concluded the lawmakers.
