Labor Caucus Co-Chairs Statement on Cesar Chavez
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Labor Caucus Co-Chairs Steven Horsford (NV-04), Mark Pocan (WI-02), Debbie Dingell (MI-06), and Donald Norcross (NJ-01) issued the following statement in response to the abuse allegations raised against labor leader Cesar Chavez:
“The deeply troubling allegations of sexual abuse by labor leader Cesar Chavez are disturbing, inexcusable, and do not reflect the values and ideals that we, and the labor movement, continue to expect and uphold.
The Congressional Labor Caucus strongly condemns the actions of Cesar Chavez and stands unequivocally in solidarity with survivors.
The heart of this movement has always been rank-and-file farmworkers—the thousands of men and women who labored in the fields and organized to demand a voice and fair treatment on the job. This movement’s legacy belongs to these workers, not to any one individual. These workers will continue to empower their communities every day.
We commend the strength and courage of the survivors who have come forward and shared their stories. We recommit ourselves in fighting to ensure every person remains safe on the jobsite, on the picket line, and in their communities.”
