Congressional Labor Caucus Applauds President Biden for Fighting to Keep U.S. Steel American-Owned and Operated
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Congressional Labor Caucus Co-Chairs Reps. Mark Pocan (D-WI), Donald Norcross (D-NJ), Debbie Dingell (D-MI), and Steven Horsford (D-NV) released the following statement after President Joe Biden announced his opposition to the sale of U.S. Steel to Japanese-owned Nippon Steel, keeping it American-owned and operated:
“We agree with President Biden that it is vital that U.S. Steel remain American-owned and operated, and we applaud the President for heeding our call for a comprehensive review of this proposed acquisition,” the Co-Chairs said. “We continue to have concerns that Nippon’s acquisition of U.S. Steel could jeopardize domestic supply chains as well as labor standards for tens of thousands of steelworkers around the country. We appreciate the President’s continued commitment to standing up for American workers, who must have a voice in this process.”
In January, the Labor Caucus Co-Chairs and Reps. Marcy Kaptur (D-OH), Nikki Budzinski (D-IL), Emilia Sykes (D-OH), and Chris Deluzio (D-PA) led 53 bipartisan Members of Congress in a letter urging the Biden Administration to ensure a comprehensive regulatory review of Nippon Steel’s acquisition of U.S. Steel, highlighting the impact of the planned acquisition on U.S. national security, domestic steel production capabilities, and the company’s workforce.
